SEIU has been a leader for years in working to fix our broken health care system and win quality, affordable health care for everyone. We all know from our bargaining experience that members are really worried about their healthcare as it is costing us more and more and yet we’re getting less benefits. Our work is finally paying off: healthcare has become a top priority for the Governor and legislative leaders who all put their proposals out there. This is an extraordinary opportunity to finally do something real and concrete to fix our health care.

Together with other unions and community partners, we’ve joined the “It’s Our HealthCare!" campaign. There will be a massive legislative campaign, including lobby visits, online organizing, house parties, and coalition work. Our campaign will be about making sure we protect what’s good about the healthcare we get right now while fixing what doesn’t work.  We also want to protect our public hospitals and clinics, set standards for good health insurance, and protect individuals from being required to buy their own insurance in the market.

In order to win, we will all have to get involved. We’ll need to share our concerns, worries, and stories, and get together to figure out a solution. Over the next several months, we will ask everyone to stand up for OUR healthcare by communicating to legislators, hosting house parties, weighing in at town halls, and taking action in our communities. Text Box: Union Members Leading The Way…
Submitted by Mario Chavez
Political Organizer

Text Box: When was the last time you saw one of your co-workers presenting at a Union meeting?
Well, you might as well get used to that idea.

There is a new member led committee on the San Antonio Rd/Calle Real campus whose goal is to educate our membership on the political process, political action, and how elected officials affect our wages, healthcare, and retirement.

The host committee is working on developing relationships with our County Supervisors to ensure that our members have an open line of communication with our elected officials so that  they understand the realities and obstacles that county employees face.

The Host Committee is composed of Dawn Lester from Social Services, Asia Eichmiller and Jenaro Valdez and from ADMHS, Carmelita Horta, Eli Villanueva, Rachel Trujillo, Ralph Barbosa, Shawn Southgate, and Veronica Pulido from Public Health.

The group is currently working on strengthening our committee by having more members join us, contact any of the members above or call Mario Chavez  at (805)963-0601 ext.13 for more information.
