Most members know by now that SEIU’s public sector union members approved the “California Unite to Win” Reorganization Plan as recommended by the International Union Executive Board.
 
The final certified election results were 88 % of members voting, voted in favor of the “California Unite to Win Reorganization” concept. Approximately 15% of the some 240,000 eligible members statewide actually voted.
 
Now the serious work of building a large, strong regional union begins in earnest. Change for Local 620 will be incremental but changes are already starting all around us as a result of the membership’s vote to reorganize some two dozen public sector locals into four large regional structures.
 
As an example, perhaps the most tangible change for Local 620 members in Santa Barbara County is the December 31st dissolution of the Santa Barbara Chapter of our sister Local, 535.  This is only a

Text Box: ‘governance’ change at this point of course as the members of Local 535 are being transitioned into what is being called at least for the time being the “Central, South Regional” union and staff appointed by the ‘regional’ will continue to provide service to their members.
 
Local 620 was asked to provide 
office space for Local 535’s staff since their lease expires December 31st and they were unable to negotiate a month to month office lease with the landlord and were unwilling to negotiate a long term office lease given the uncertainties of the new structure. Thus Local 620 agreed to do so and has cleared out an office downstairs in our Santa Barbara office and we are in the process of welcoming Scott Abbott, their Office Manager (and former Executive Board Officer of Local 620) as well as their current Field Representative Ms. Helen Horn.
 
Members should recall that Local 620, unlike all the other California public local unions is not being dissolved or subsumed at this time. This is due to the fact that we have an apparently unique contract with the International Union spelling out our complete local control and local
