Walter Hamilton…

Local 620 Members will recall that the International Union (I.U.) has been holding hearings around the State to receive input from local Union Members about its plan to reorganize local union structures in California.

The Executive Board of our I.U. met on June 10th and voted to consolidate most SEIU public sector local unions in California into four large regional bodies.  The concept is clear, but the details are largely unknown at this time.

SEIU Lays out Consolidation’s Goals
& Objectives

The I.U. has dubbed the restructuring the Unite to Win Plan and it marks a historical new chapter in SEIU’s efforts to build the strongest Union possible for Members in California.  The International Union’s stated goals are to:

1. Build greater unity by creating stronger regional and statewide local unions and industry councils, which will help us focus our resources and strategies on winning better contracts and improving the services and healthcare our communities need.

2. Foster greater political strength so SEIU Members can elect and hold officials accountable on issues important to working families.

3. Enable SEIU Members to continue to unite more workers into our Union to give all of us a stronger voice to win a better future.

Text Box: 4. Increase and improve communications so Members stay informed and can participate in building a stronger Union that consistently wins for our families and our future.

5. Strengthen our voice in the workplace to solve problems, raise workplace standards, and improve our working lives.

Local 620 would join forces with tens of
thousands of Union Members

Specifically for Members in our Local, the plan as proposed would unite our 3,500 Members with somewhere between an estimated 80,000 and 100,000 SEIU Members in Orange, Los Angeles, Ventura, Santa Barbara & San Luis Obispo Counties.

Local 620’s Officers take a ‘Balanced
Approach’ & Cite Local Concerns

Local 620’s intends to fully participate in the discussions and decisions to come regarding implementation of the International Executive Board’s (I.E.B.’s) vision for California’s local and regional structures.

The Executive Board of Local 620 has the following concerns about the current plan as we understand them:

· How will decisions about the provision of representation and service in Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo counties be made?

· Will either of our offices in those two
